with 3.0beta1 all scans in sidebar have been replaced with other bookmarks (i'm not sure which). i know that scanned sites are now saved as regular bookmarks, but i see no instructions on steps required to effect a change over to some new scheme, how to specify where these scanner bookmarks are kept (in a bookmarks folder, maybe?), or (now) how to get back my defined scans. HELP! thanks in advance....
Re: with 3.0beta1 all scans are replaced in sidebar with ...
First of all, you can always go back to the previous version of update scanner, and nothing will have changed. Just re-download it from the "Install" link on the left.
When you first install the beta, any existing items are copied into a bookmark folder called "Update Scanner's Pages". You shouldn't need to do anything at all.
Any bookmarks in the "Update Scanner's Pages" folder will appear in the update scanner sidebar.
Can you describe your problem in more detail?
Re: with 3.0beta1 all scans are replaced in sidebar with ...
hmmm
i looked for some folder in bookmarks with a "update" or "scanner" name, but didn't see any. now i just searched for on using "organize bookmarks" and don't see anything under "Bookmarks Menu" (bookmarks toolbar, for that matter.)
when i first loaded the beta i did see the scanned paged correctly, and just for fun i added a folder and put a few related scans in it. then i shutdown ff and the computer and when i came back and rebooted and loaded ff i see a list of bookmarks (i haven't been able to identify how they are 'chosen' -- but they definitely aren't the scan sites i started with.)
is there some way the beta can be forced to read the updatescanner directory in my profile and start again? of do i need to revert to the last version of updatescanner and then reinstall the beta?
do you need more information? let me know...

Re: with 3.0beta1 all scans are replaced in sidebar with ...
Hi Ken,
Thanks, that description helps. It looks like there's a problem if the update scanner bookmark folder itself gets deleted.. I'll get this fixed soon.
To rerun the upgrade process, you'll need to do the following:
1. Type **about:config** into the URL bar
2. Type **updatescan.version** into the filter box
3. Double click on the **3.0beta1** value
4. Change it to **2.2.3**
5. Close all browser windows and restart firefox
Thanks again for your help tracking down this problem.
Re: with 3.0beta1 all scans are replaced in sidebar with ...
i've changed the version number in about:config, then the next cay i changed it back again to the beta, and found that i had the expected folder of "update scanner's pages" in my bookmarks. i created some new subfolders and moved items into them -- nice feature. then the next day (new boot) i was back to a seemingly random selection of bookmarks in the updatescanner's sidebar, containing nothing i wanted scanned. i repeated the version change, then again back to the beta, and then i found a duplicate "update scanner's pages" folder in my bookmarks list. the extension didn't notice that there was already a folder there named that, so it created another one.
just thought you'd want to know.... thanks for your work on this great extension.
Re: with 3.0beta1 all scans are replaced in sidebar with ...
The "Update Scanner's Pages" folder has a special annotation that identifies it to Update Scanner. You ought to be able to rename the folder to whatever you like, and Update Scanner will still recognise it by its annotation.
It sounds to me like something is deleting this annotation. This causes Update Scanner to get confused.
Do you have any addons that might modify bookmarks? Perhaps a bookmark synchroniser?
Re: with 3.0beta1 all scans are replaced in sidebar with ...
foxmarks; i'm sure lot of your users use it, too. it is great for being able to sync updatescanner's pages between computers. i hope it can be made to work.
is there a way to manually identify the correct bookmarks folder? i need a fix for now.
thanks in advance.
Re: 3.0beta1: all scans replaced in sidebar with some ...
i've run into a blank sidebar, no scans or even regular bookmarks. i don't knwo why it happened.
i tried changing the updatescanner version #, then close and restart firefox, but oddly the version number has reverted to the beta, and still no scans. in "manage bookmarks" i can see the "update scanner's pages" folder, with the correct contents. there is a whole bunch of stuff in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[profilename]\updatescanner\
i just cannot get the beta to recognize the data. is there some way to 'force' the extension to read the data in a particular folder?
thanks in advance
Re: 3.0beta1: all scans replaced in sidebar with some ...
The instructions I gave above were to re-run the updatescanner upgrade process, which imports previous scan pages into your bookmarks, ready for use with the new version of updatescanner. The version number will automatically update to the beta after the upgrade finishes.
I have installed and tested updatescanner with foxmarks without any problems.
The files in the "updatescanner" directory are just used to save the previous state of the web pages, they don't contain any information about the updatescanner bookmarks, so you can't import them directly.
It sounds like you have a problem with your firefox bookmarks. I would recommend creating a new profile and restoring your bookmarks from a previous backup. The firefox help pages will tell you how to do this.
Please try with a new profile and let me know if you still see any problems. See the bugs link on the left for more details.
