How to turn scanner off? Properties change on its own?

Can someone please address the folowing:
1. How do you turn the scanner off? Here is what happened: When i turned the computer on this morning, it poped up the alert window indicating that there was an update sometime during the night. So i opened the firefox, under it's "Tool" menu, looked at the "Update scanner". There was no check mark in front of it. That means the scanner is off? Right? There is no way to tell if the scanner is actually running?
2. is it turned on/off for each web address individually? Or, does it monitor all websites listed in the left hand column?
3. The properties changed without having chnged them. In the "Update scanner window, the "scan every" had changed to 5 minutes from 1 minute and the "Use Unicode (UTF-8) had been checked instead of Autocheck. evn though i had not made any of these changes.
4. After I open the scanner, I see column on the left side that lists the web sites. Right now I have only one listed. I have the scanner set to not open the updated page in a new window. When update occurs, The scanner does not seem to go to the changed new page automatically, even though i have it set to "automatic check". How do i make the scanner to bring up new page replace the old page automatically.
5. When i click on "new page" link above my monitored page in the scanner window, the updated page shows from the top of the page but not the part of the page that was showing on the old page (I have the window cropped to show only part of the page). Is there a way I can set the scanner so it would show the new page in the same area as the old page?
Thanks for the help.

Re: How to turn scanner off? Properties change on its own?

First, take a look at the help pages - they're not too long and tedious, and might help answer some of your questions.

Right? The check mark means the sidebar is open. There is currently no way of disabling the scanner.

2. is it turned on/off for each web address individually? Or, does it monitor all websites listed in the left hand column?

You can disable scanning for a particular site by setting the autoscan to "Manual"

3. The properties changed without having chnged them. In the "Update scanner window, the "scan every" had changed to 5 minutes from 1 minute and the "Use Unicode (UTF-8) had been checked instead of Autocheck. evn though i had not made any of these changes.

You can't set the scan time lower than 5 minutes (see previous posts for discussions on this point). If you set the character encoding to Automatic, it will be automatically set to the detected encoding next time the page is scanned.

The scanner won't show a page automatically - you need to click the item in the sidebar. The help pages explain this.

5. When i click on "new page" link above my monitored page in the scanner window, the updated page shows from the top of the page but not the part of the page that was showing on the old page (I have the window cropped to show only part of the page). Is there a way I can set the scanner so it would show the new page in the same area as the old page?

I don't quite understand.. do you mean you want the new page to automatically scroll to the same point? You can always open the "New" and "Old" in different tabs, and switch between them that way.

Re: How to turn scanner off? Properties change on its own?

Thanks for the reply, it helps. With a couple of changes in this program, it will be great little utility. Hope you get it doen in near future. You perhaps got that from my questions:

Disable / discontinue monitoring without having to uninstall the thing.

Choose to monitor only some of the sites on the list.

Frequency every minute or even less.

Thanks.
