Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Wow, that's a lot to check! I'll take a look when I have a few free moments.
In the meantime if you could try to narrow down the list a bit, that would help.
eg. disable half of them and see if the problem is still there, and keep dividing in half until you've found the problematic addon.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

I have found that Auto Pager causes this problem which is freezing of Firefox if attempting to load one of Update Scanner bookmarks via Update Scanner sidebar. Please, fix it if possible ASAP. Thanks

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

A few days after - I have the awareness that the manifestation of the "freezing" phenomenon occurs when attempting to open simultaneously more then 15 tabs in the "Show all Changed Pages in new tabs" button. In this case, The Commit Charge (K) Peaks at over 1.2 GB

This phenomenon does not occur in 3.0.3 even if attempting to open simultaneously more then 45 tabs.

Any attempt to open simultaneously less then 15 tabs on V 3.0.4 does not arouse the "freezing" phenomenon although the Commit Charge (K) Peaks at 800 - 900 MB (average)

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

So far gladder hangs Firefox. I'm continuing with testing (bad english :\)

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@ soar_king
@ Brendan

About minute after Firefox hangs there is a message like this one:
Warning: Uresponsive script
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: file:///C:/Documents%20And%20Settings/[username]/Application %20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/1f0fph6x.default/extensions/%7B0C4B554C-05D9-11DB-9804-B622A1EF5492%7D/components/glPHPproxy.js:43

Don't ask me again

Stop script Continue

So can you wait until that message appear and post what it says. It will be very helpful.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@ HanDy_man

If I`m not mistaking, disabling the BabelFish{1.84} solved that problem. The message was: "chrome://babelmousish/content/bf.js:2444".

I understand that BabelFish was updated (1.88) but not yet available in Mozila site.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Ups sry I've skiped first lines from your post.

Thanks, I saw your message on the gladder forum too. Hopefully a gladder update will fix this issue.

[EDIT:] Just to clarify, this is a very similar problem to the issues with Babelfish and Autopager

Can you confirm that you see the same problem in a new profile with no other addons installed?
(see the bugs link on the left for instructions)

To anyone seeing this problem, the following error message should appear after 30 seconds or so:

Quote:
Warning: Uresponsive script
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Please post the exact contents of the error message, and try to reproduce the problem in a new firefox profile (see the bugs link on the left for instructions).

Thanks for your patience.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

"Can you confirm that you see the same problem in a new profile with no other addons installed?"

Sorry, But my knowledge concerning new profiles is limited. I have giving to understand that becoming involved with profiles and profiles operation, is not recommended for users with low knowledge like me.

Thanks

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@Brendan:
I've just done this with 20 long and complex pages, and it was quite slow but didn't freeze.
You will probably see performance differences depending on the size of the pages you're opening.
Opening this many tabs simultaneously is pretty slow in Firefox anyway - you can use the bookmark sidebar to show this.

It would be good to know if the freezing you're seeing is a problem with an profile/addon conflict, or some limitation of Updatescanner on your system.

Creating a new profile for testing would be the best way of finding this out. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles is a good tutorial, if that helps.

If you're not happy creating a new profile, you could try disabling all of your other addons, and see if that helps.

Also, you should see a "Unresponsive Script" error message after the freeze - can you post the exact text of the error? This will help narrow down what is causing the freeze.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@ updatescanner

This will take me some time to preform and I will do it ASAP.

Although opening many tabs simultaneously is pretty slow in Firefox anyway, I did recognize the "freeze" only with V 3.0.4

Opening many tabs directly from the bookmarks does not have the same effect like opening the tabs from the updatescanner. Opening from the updatescanner causes a major peak in memory CPU Usage and PF Usage - evidence to the "quite slow" you have experienced and "freeze" I have experienced.

Due to the variance of CPU activity in comparison of tab opening (Bookmarks/ Updatescanner ) it is quite safe to conclude that the root of the problem lies in the Updatescanner and not the Firefox behavior. The fact that the manifestation take place only in V 3.0.4 , bases this conclusion.

My temp solution - execute scan in segments (not more then 10 pages at a time). Implementation of this solution prevents my SYS to freeze.

will continue to update

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

All good thoughts, what you say makes sense. Just one comment: opening a tab in updatescanner will always be more resource-intensive than opening a normal bookmark, since it needs to do the change highlighting.

One possible improvement for future versions would be to open the tabs all in one go, but to delay the change highlighting (for example, the first tab highlights immediately, and each subsequent tab waits for a second or two before performing the highlighting).

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Update

I have launched a trial according to your suggestion and disabled all Add-ons.

Running updatescanner and opening tabs from the "Show all changes.." Does not result with improvement of CPU use which peaks at 1 - 1.2 GB during tab opening process.

Moreover - Now, after reactivating all Add-ones, FF freezes when selecting an item from the list of sites to be scanned.
As a result of this new manifestation, I had no option but to downgrade updatescanner to V. 3.0.3 solving all the problems.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Same problem. But I have much less adons

Adblock Plus
Checkpaces
ColorfulTabs
Download Statusbar (by the time you read this, this is gone)
DownThemAll!
Scrabbook
Update Scanner

I think this is due to the insane load update scanner put on firefox if scanner is trying to load a lot of websites (in my case on tab).
Maybe it would be best if you could make the scanner create and load 3 tab max at the time. And once one website is loaded, scanner could try to load a new tab for another website and so on. What scanner should not try to do is open ALL updated websites at the same time...

PS: I am using the last version of everything

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Please try disabling/enabling your addons one at a time to check if one of them is causing a conflict.

Also, you should see a "Unresponsive Script" error message after the freeze - can you post the exact text of the error? This will help narrow down what is causing the freeze.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

I don't even have that "unresponsive script" error message. Window Vista just hangs (I once let it run for about 1 hour and turn off my computer to restart). This happen to me several times. I reinstall many times firefox. To my knowledge, this is the only software that hang, and only after update scanner. Now, I press "shows all change in new tabs" several times while it scans to reduce the load on the browser. So far no crash.

In the event log, all it say is that Firefox stopped interacting with windows and was closed.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

I had the same problem with the 3.0.5 (and the 3.0.4 too).
I came to the 3.0.3

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@kurtz:
Do you see an error message?
Does this happen every time, or just when you open lots of pages simultaneously?
Have you tried disabling your other addons?

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Update:

It appears that Vr 3.0.5 is showing stability. Although CPU peeks at 1.5 - 2 GB when opening 10-15 tabs simultaneously, FF does not freeze and error message does not appear.

"Delay the change highlighting", as suggested above, appears to be the suitable action.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Update:

Today, when opening 9 tabs through vr 3.0.5, CPU peaked at 2.1 GB and FF crashed with no error message apart from hearing the "critical stop" wav of the windows system.

Re opening the FF resulted with all updatescanner tabs, from the previous session, opened with no mentionable problems.

Lately i am experiencing a problem with a web site (Under IE TAB) showing the error message: "WISESTAMP: [ScriptLoader.js::handleEvent] href == about:blank

The problem started after update to vr 3.0.5 and is not systematic

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Update 2 :

I have just experienced a second crash of FF after trying to open 9 tabs simultaneously (Under Vr 3.0.5)

Before the crash occurrence - a Runtime error message appear on the screen titled: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library".

Body of message: "Program: C:\Program Files\Mozila Firefox\Firefox.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@Brendan:
Application crashes indicate it might be a problem with your firefox profile, or possibly extension conflict.
From http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+ol... :

If you are having a problem with Firefox then sometimes, rather than trying to find and fix the exact cause of the problem, it is easier just to make a new Firefox profile and copy your most important data over to it.

I'm not seeing any of the problems that you're reporting, and I'm afraid there's not much I can do to help unless you can try updatescanner in a new profile, with no other extensions installed.

Having said that, I've uploaded an experimental beta release that might help you.. please see my next post.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Summary:
If you're seeing a freeze when clicking on an updatescanner page:

1) Extension Conflict
* Disable all other extensions and see if that helps the problem. If it does, re-enable them one by one to see which extension is causing the conflict.
* If you see an error message that says "Warning: Uresponsive script", note down the full error message and post it here.

2) CPU Resource Limitations
* Download v3.0.6Beta1 from the BetaDownload page, and see if that helps
* Disable all other extensions, as mentioned above
* Create a new profile, install only Update Scanner, and see if that fixes the problem

Known Extension Conflicts:
Autopager [fixed in Autopager v0.5.2.1]
Babelfish [fixed in Babelfish v1.88]
Gladder [bug reported, not yet fixed]
Redirect Remover [extension is no longer supported by the author]

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

CPU Resource Limitations:

As advised, I have Download v3.0.6Beta1 and performed a scan. The Scan has produced 6 tabs that when opened, Peaked CPU at 1.4 GB

In comparison with v3.0.3, 1.4 GB is a high value (at v3.0.3 CPU averages at 650-700 MB)

Regarding your advise of Disabling all other extensions - Please attention my post from 02/07/2009

Note: I have disabled all Known Extension Conflicts

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Update:

Noticeable improvement in CPU Resource Limitations (v3.0.6Beta1). The delay in page load of each tab does the trick and the CPU does not exceed 1.1 GB although it is a hight value.

Thanks :)

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

I have also seen this behaviour, new to the 3.0.5.  FF doesn't freeze, it's just growing past 1GB with a few pages and causing a lot of paging.  Once the pages complete loading, the garbage collector runs and FF schrinks back down to 1/4GB. Look for a pass by value that was a pass by reference.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Update:

I have successful overcome my fear and followed your suggestion by creating a new profile. I installed V3.0.5 and executed a scan. At 20 new tabs - No problem (CPU peak at 800-900 MB).

At this point I started to install Add-ons (One at a time) Preforming a Scan to appreciate performance.

After installation of Adblock plus V1.0.2 and Adblock Plus Element hiding Helper V1.0.6, I have noticed (At 20-+ new tabs) a CPU peak of over 2 GB and a message: Script: chrome://searchshield/content/overlay.js:267

Extension Conflicts?

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

@Brendan:
I'm not sure what searchshield is, but a google search comes up with results from AVG. Do you have this installed?
Does SearchShield appear as an extension? Is there any way to disable it and try again?

@WHRoeder:
Thanks for the tip, I haven't found anything suspicious yet, but there are a few more experiments I'd like to do. The main change made to 3.0.5 was to pass the page contents as a data URI, so perhaps there's something internal to the Mozilla code that's causing this memory load..

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

A look at the ADD-on list revealed the Add-on "AVG safe search v8.5". This add-on was not installed by me. It is, most probably, installed automatically with the AVG anti virus software. As advised, i have disabled the add-on and activated a scan (with v3.0.5) that yield 20 new tabs. Opening the tabs generated a CPU peak at 1.7 GB although average CPU stood, through the hall tab opening process, at 600 - 700 MB.

At this point it is hard for me to establish a conclusion that "AVG safe search v8.5" is the cause for the memory load, as realized in high CPU measure.

Will continue to carry out more scans in order to refine the problem after isolating the AVG add-on.

Did you find Extension Conflicts with Adblock plus V1.0.2 and Adblock Plus Element hiding Helper V1.0.6 ?

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

Have you seen the error message / freezing since you disabled the AVG addon?
Adblock plus and the element hiding helper work fine for me.
At the moment I think the high memory load is due to firefox opening a large number of data URIs simulataneously. I'm not sure how to solve this, other than ensuring that not too many tabs are opened at once.

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

A similar problem occurs with the PasswordMaker add-on.  Is there a way you can get in touch with the developer of that add-on to suggest fixes to the problem?

Re: update to 3.0.4 , Firefox freezes

I have had PasswordMaker installed for a while, and see no problems. Can you provide some simple instructions to recreate the problem from a new profile?
